An experiment

Inspired by the video “Look up", I have decided to experiment on making my smartphone a “dumbphone" and hence disconnect myself from the virtual world. The video was not my only inspiration for taking this step. It certainly helped me to make this decision faster. My other inspiration to disconnect myself from the so called online social world was the constant guilt I felt for not doing what I am supposed to do and wasting my time endlessly. Since it's inception and rise to popularity, social networking sites have successfully wasted people's millions of hours- the time they could have utilized to do something productive. Smartphones and tablets have insured we are never away from our loved ones. But is liking someone's photo really connecting them to you? Is this the best way to show someone that you care for them? Are you really a great dad if you can't keep your child entertained without an ipad? Have you not become one of those persons who write “Happy m...

Half Girlfriend By Chetan Bhagat Book review

Image
I have read many novels but I do not feel like reviewing them on this blog- book reviews do not actually fit into the theme of this blog. But seeing the popularity of Chetan Bhagat's novels in India [and because of the fact that I had preordered the novel ;-) ] I do feel obliged to let my readers know about my feelings on the novel. Novel-Half Girlfriend Author-Chetan Bhagat Pages-260 Publication-RUPA Rating- 2.5/5 I am not a Chetan Bhagat fan, but his immense popularity makes his novels kind of a very common subject to talk about and I do not want to miss being not in a discussion just because I did not read a novel. That's my reason for reading this novel- because everyone has to. The novel starts with our protagonist Madhav getting admission in a prestigious college of Delhi from management quota in sports (we get to know that he is a state level basketball player). Madhav is a Bihari boy, belonging to a small village.  He meets Riya at the baketball court and soon t...

Just an answer

Just an answer Recently I was asked this question on Quora:- "I'm an atheist. Should I raise my child to believe that there is a God, or not? Why?" I gave an answer to this question and I would like to share it with the readers of this blog. Given the theme of this blog, it seems appropriate to share with you all this short answer. Answer :- The most important thing you can teach your kids is to think rationally, with a free mind and an unbiased view of the world. If you teach him/her this, they will decide for themselves whether to believe in God or not. Imposing views never works. Feel free to express your views in the comment section. Power of Ideas

Image
Power of Ideas Why I am writing this post It's pretty simple. I think nowadays our life has become too mechanical. 9 to 5 jobs and other tight schedules means we are bound to a routine which we follow mechanically. Some might argue that regularity in everything is good- they may even say it's the essential feature of an organised life. True enough, but one must not forget that while doing things mechanically may increase your efficiency, it's sure to bring down your creativity. Cyclic processes inhibit open minded thinking- it kills creativity. But creativity is needed for inception of ideas. Without creativity, ideas would be worthless. So my simple aim to write this post is to urge my readers to never stop thinking. For when you stop thinking, your world will fall into another mechanical process from which you may never be able to come out. You will become just another 'Person'. But if you don't want to be just another 'Person' and truly...

GANDHI - The Nation’s Father?

(This article does intend to hurt people’s sentiment (if possible) and opposes the view of many)                                GANDHI - The Nation’s Father? Our country has always held Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi as the greatest human being ever to take birth. He is the considered to be the one who gave our nation freedom from the British rule. He is also the role model for many leaders and people. However, is he really that worthy or deserving? Firstly, he has been excessively  over-hyped  by everyone. Everyone believes that he single handedly fought the nation and bought us our freedom. Well if he did then he should also be held responsible for the death of the millions due to the Partition of our country, the prize we had to pay for our freedom, which he accepted. People overlook or even do not take consideration...

Why people don't believe in evolution?

Image
Evolution is the change in the inherited characteristics of biological populations over successive generations. Evolutionary processes give rise to diversity at every level of biological organisation , including species , individual organisms and molecules such as DNA and proteins. That's the definition of evolution you are going to get on Wikipedia. I know it sounds like very 'Hi-Fi' and complex thing to understand but believe me, it's not so. In simple words, the theory of evolution attempts to answer a question mankind has been trying to answer for, well, for as long as they have been intelligent enough to ask questions at all-how did life form originate on earth? How did we 'occur'? I believe questions like these which the ancient man was not able to answer due to their poor knowledge of science led to the creation of religion. Religion attempted to answer these questions-and they did it in their own ways. And believe me, some of them are just ridicul...

Influence of TV commercials

Image
Influence of TV commercials  Ours is the age of electronics-and TC is the most common device of electronics in our household nowadays. Almost 60% of the households in India today has a DTH or cable TV service. In such a scenario, TV commercials are bound to affect all its viewers. Most commercials are targeted at a specific audience-some are for all. These advertisements try to showcase their products in the most desirable ways possible-and to do this, they resort to ways which may not always be ethically sound. For instance, mutual fund brokers may advertise that they will ensure 'X' % of their returns-these numbers are always made to look attractive- but there's always terms and conditions which changes the whole meaning of the AD(those little starts). People, often their , fall for this kind of lucrative but highly deceptive offers. Some commercials are targeted f...

JUST A POEM

JUST A POEM I THINK THAT I FIGHT EVERY DAY BUT  I JUST WHINE EVERY DAY, I THINK NO ONE LIKES ME BUT  I FORGET THAT I HAVE FRIENDS WHO ARE THERE FOR ME, I THINK THAT MY FATHER DOES NOT LOVE ME WELL AT LEAST HE IS STILL THERE FOR ME, I THINK THAT MY LIFE IS TESTING WHILE THERE ARE PEOPLE OUT THERE SUFFERING, I WANT A GIRL TO LIKE ME IGNORING PEOPLE THAT ARE NEAR TO ME, I THINK THAT I AM LONELY WHILE THERE ARE PEOPLE WITH FAITH WORSE THAN MINE.

WHY I DO NOT BELIEVE IN A GOD

WHY I DO NOT BELIEVE IN A GOD My earlier posts on god and religion have shown my mistrust on there being a god or not believing in it. Well I have my reasons for not believing or hating a god and it is not something that I do to stand out. Well this time I am going to give you my reasons. Firstly, the image that has been created of it makes it seem like a big egomaniac. The image of it according to me is such that he needs to be constantly be praised for being our creator or in order for it to do something good for us. This makes me think that he created us just to have someone stroke his ego. Some might say that it is us who do this and God never asked anything from us. Then why do we think that praying to him would do us any good if he does not have an ego. He would always remain impartial and we do not have to constantly pl...

FEMALE FOETICIDE AND DISCRIMINATION

(All facts were obtained from Wikipedia and not made up and the facts are copied from there.)                           FEMALE FOETICIDE AND DISCRIMINATION India has always been thought as the country were sex-selective abortion is prominent. It is the place where females are considered trivial in comparison of males and are killed when they are just a foetus. It happens due the fact that a certain but a big portion of people, believe females to be inferior to males and would not be able carry their lineage forward. We are considered to discriminate by gender even in today’s “modern” time. In addition’ these thoughts are of the very people that live in this country but is it the only place such vile practice happens? The answer is no that might seem like an untruthful answer to many but is the reality that maybe most people will not know about. In countries like the Republic of China, Pakistan, USA, Southeast...

Being Fair

BEING FAIR In today’s time wherever we see people seem to have developed certain fondness for having white and fair skin. The fondness for being fair is largely renowned here in India. Everywhere fairness creams toothpaste for fair teeth and such absurd things are being advertised and even promoted by celebrities in order to attract more customers. In addition, these products are not only made and marketed for women but also for men. Many people even buy these products and believe being fair is to be beautiful. It is strange to see this kind of situation where earlier being tall, dark and handsome was a priority for men to attract girls and women whose dusky skin is the admiration of the entire world. These days even a small hint of duskiness is considered not to be beautiful, only ...

LOVE AND HATE

Image
LOVE AND HATE                    “Innately, there are qualities in human beings that are always repetitive.               There are things like love and hate and jealousy that are going to be there forever.”                                                                                                       Shiloh Fernandez Love and hate are the most pure and intense emotions that a human being is able to feel. These feelings might have existed since the ti...

RELIGION-WHAT GOOD HAS IT DONE?

Image
RELIGION-WHAT GOOD HAS IT DONE?                                         “ Religion does not make man                                                   But man makes religion” So after some time I am back to my favourite topic of God and wherever there is god there is religion. The saying above says that man makes religion but in reality, we make a person’s religion to be important then the human. There are, many gods available with them many religions are also there. Some of the well-known religions are Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Jainism, Hinduism and many others and many sub religions are there. Most of people on our planet follow some rel...

Rape- Are women always the victim?

Rape- Are women always the victim? Whenever we hear or read the word sexual harassment or rape in somewhere the instant thought that comes to our mind is that some man or men harassed a girl or forced her to have non-consensual sex. We always assume that only men can be capable of doing such despicable, disgusting and horrifying thing and women are always the victims. Even news shown anywhere only signifies this fact. However, is it really the whole reality? Well it is not. Firstly, it is not always that only a male can harass or force someone. A woman too can do those things. Whoever might be reading this will think that me being a guy I am trying to vilify women by accusing them of doing something like this and making guys seem like a victim. In reality, it does happen but we do not accept this fact because it seems unnatural and also because no cases as s...

MONOGAMY- Does It Really Exist?

Image
MONOGAMY- Does It Really Exist? Monogamy by common definition means having one partner at a time or having feelings for just one person at a time. It is considered to be very important in any relationship be it marriage, live-in or in couples. It is considered that when you are in love or like someone that it is wrong to have even feelings or fantasy or have even a slight attraction towards someone else. If you are with someone, you can just be with him or her in every sense. In marriage, it becomes more important as you vow to love your partner until death does you apart. It also becomes important due to the fact that if the society finds out you were not monogamous your standing in it would be lost. To be monogamous in your relationship means, you are truthful and respectful to your partner. Well according to me, monogamy does not exist as many people think it does. It does sound like a nice i...

PORN- Why is it a Taboo?

Image
PORN- Why is it a Taboo? Porn and sex has always been a controversial or a taboo subject to talk about. We cannot talk about them in front of our elders or we may have to face their wrath. We are uncomfortable to tell that we watch porn to people we are in relation with to be not be labeled a pervert or something else and jeopardize our relationships. In addition, girls cannot tell their friends they watch porn as it is not socially acceptable and people are sure to ridicule them or think about them in the wrong and same is the case with guys. However, why is it such a taboo in our Indian society? The main reason may be the conservative mindset of our elders, which is carried on by the younger generations. We are not even comfortable to even utter the word sex in front of our parents as it makes the situation uncomfortable  as most find it weird talking a...

Our Need to Depend on a God

Image
Our Need to Depend on a God One thing has remained a constant in people’s lives for a very long time and that is an Almighty or a God, whatever works for you. Since our childhood, we have been told about it and taught what it is.  We are taught that it is a guy or sometimes a girl who used to be on earth and fought evil and won.  Well not every story is like that but the same thing happens. Now they are living in heaven taking trips to Earth sometimes mostly in Indian mythology.  In addition, they are our Creator, different for people of different religion, and make decisions for our lives based on our actions. We pray to them every day and thank them to please and bribe them in doing something good for us. It keeps tab on us every single moment of our life and on so many people that is truly remarkable. We are told that if we do something wrong it will punish us so we sh...
