Half Girlfriend By Chetan Bhagat Book review
I have read many novels but I do not feel like reviewing them on this blog- book reviews do not actually fit into the theme of this blog.
But seeing the popularity of Chetan Bhagat's novels in India [and because of the fact that I had preordered the novel ;-) ] I do feel obliged to let my readers know about my feelings on the novel.
Novel-Half Girlfriend
Author-Chetan Bhagat
Pages-260
Publication-RUPA
Rating- 2.5/5
I am not a Chetan Bhagat fan, but his immense popularity makes his novels kind of a very common subject to talk about and I do not want to miss being not in a discussion just because I did not read a novel. That's my reason for reading this novel- because everyone has to.
The novel starts with our protagonist Madhav getting admission in a prestigious college of Delhi from management quota in sports (we get to know that he is a state level basketball player). Madhav is a Bihari boy, belonging to a small village.
He meets Riya at the baketball court and soon they become good friends. They bond over basketball. While Madhav's
English is a problem, he soon finds that it doesnt matter to Riya in what language they speak.
What happens next is written on the back of the book.
Soon they break up.
Madhav goes to his village to help his mother run a non profit school.
Riya marries a rich family friend.
A lot happens over the next 100 page regarding the problems of running the school. By sheer coincidence, after 2 3 years later, Riya again meets Madhav in
Patna.
Everything in this book upto now is utterly predictable.
After this, the story arc becomes a little darker, though its still predictable.
However, I will not disclose the next part of the story.
If you think the book is worth a read, find it out for yourself.
This novel is yet another classic CB novel, with nothing new to offer. The story touches on the issues like corruption, language divide and social divide in society. But the main focus is the love life of our protagonist. The story, though simple, has some flaws.
Some of the coincidences happening in the book are totally unrealistic.
The language of the book is very simple. There's not even a single word for which you will have to pick up a dictionary even if you are just an occasional reader. There are some grammatical errors.
However there is nothing which alters the meanings of sentences.
To conclude, Half Girlfriend is just another C B novel with nothing new to offer. If you are a C B fan, read the novel
[even slow readers will easily finish the novel in around 10 hours. If you have practised fast reading, it will take you less time than the LOTR 3 movie ;-
)].
However, if you have not liked his earlier works, there's no need to pick this one up.
