Being Fair
BEING FAIR
In today’s
time wherever we see people seem to have developed certain fondness for having
white and fair skin. The fondness for being fair is largely renowned here in
India. Everywhere fairness creams toothpaste for fair teeth and such absurd
things are being advertised and even promoted by celebrities in order to
attract more customers. In addition, these products are not only made and marketed
for women but also for men. Many people even buy these products and believe
being fair is to be beautiful.
It is strange to see this kind of situation where
earlier being tall, dark and handsome was a priority for men to attract girls
and women whose dusky skin is the admiration of the entire world. These days
even a small hint of duskiness is considered not to be beautiful, only if you
have fair and unblemished skin you are beautiful. Men too these days are
starting to use such products because it is the new craze and that is what our
favourite celebrities are marketing. In India, actors are worshipped and if
they promote such products, they would certainly buy them. The products are so
heavily marketed here that we can see them on billboards, advertisements on TV
and even in movies.
The need to be fair comes for our need to ape the
west. We have always been in awe of them and always have tried to be like them.
Just because we consider them better than us, we try to be like them. It is
said that if you cannot beat them then join them and that is what we are
doing. This is just like The Holocaust
where one characteristic that was considered superior was made to be prominent
and if someone did not have it, they were killed. However, in today’s age we do
not kill them but change them so that they have the features that the majority
consider to be desirable and again which would make us seem more like the
people in West. In addition, the ridicule people with dark skin are made to
face by others, including their friends and family, helps in propagating this
agenda and this is on which companies cash on.
Well I always end my post with the line like I hope
that one day our need to ape the west ends and we start accepting our
individuality but I have faith that this situation is never going to change and
we would always consider us to be inferior.
